This large group of complex hybrids of garden origin are much varied in color and plant height. They are all rhizomatous, herbaceous perennials. Some are short and stocky, others tall and slender. Some glaucous gray and leathery, others dark chocolate red and thin. Flowers range from small with narrow segments to large and ruffled. Colors range from pale yellow to orange or scarlet. They all perform well in full sun to light shade and are quite tolerant of dry conditions. Some can also be grown in standing water. These are indeed very durable plants. The very colorful flowers occur off and on all summer long and are borne on spikes of varying heights depending on the cultivar. The flowers are generally about 4 inches across. Hardy in zones 7 - 10.
